Real talk: Using song lyrics to teach perception and the Johari Window

ABSTRACT

Rap music is an essential component of hip-hop culture and hip-hop pedagogy. The activity uses music, in particular hip-hop music, as a means of teaching the Johari Window. Students were required to complete the Johari Window panels (open, blind, hidden, unknown) using lyrics from popular songs. The article details this activity and its applicability in communication courses.

Courses: Interpersonal Communication, Small Group Communication, Intercultural Communication.

Objectives: This activity aims to increase students’ understanding of the Johari Window and to demonstrate the applicability of the Johari Window to their everyday lives.
