Pages 32-39 | Published online: 04 May 2018

ABSTRACT

The scandalous publication of La Vie sexuelle de Catherine M. by the French art critic Catherine Millet, in 2001, generated great interest from the media and the public. Catherine Millet's autobiography presents itself as the unaffectionate crude description of her sexual experiences; for example, it describes numerous orgies. For a group of Parisian intellectuals such as Philippe Sollers, the “erotic” text's transgressive identity is a political reflection on society and its social norms. Some critics don't acknowledge the literary value of Millet's book and reject its erotic label. What information then is conveyed to the reader? In this article, Katia Gottin examines the ways in which the discourse of scandal produced around the text affects the reader's choices and the act of reading itself. The analysis of the La Vie sexuelle de Catherine M. scandal shows how the discrepancy between readers, intratextuality, and extratextuality is formed.
