Abstract

A simple inverse acoustic algorithm using Levenberg-Marquardt method with statistical consideration is developed to estimate the sound velocity and water density simultaneously as a function of depth from the transient measurements of the wave displacement at some suitable locations.

To show the validity of the present study, the inverse calculations are performed based on the simulated exact and inexact measurement data, moreover, the statistical analysis is also considered here to analyze this inverse problem and to determine both the best measurement position and the 99% confidence bounds.

Results show that the accuracy of the estimated sound velocity, water density and their sensitivity to the measurement errors depend on the number of measurement data as well as the measurement positions. The accurate inverse solutions can be obtained only when both the number of measurements and the measurement positions are chosen properly.
