Abstract
The reaction of 6-methyl-2-thiouracil with bromodiethyl malonate gave a mixture of both regioisomers in different ratios. The same reaction with bromomalononitrile and 2-(bromomethyl)benzonitrile gave a single regioisomer in high yield. The results of these studies compared with those derived computationally using DFT and AIM methods at the B3LYP level of theory with 6-31G** as the basis set for the estimation of the major regioisomer.
