Down the Rabbit Hole: Using The Matrix to Reflect on Teacher Education

Abstract

In this article we use The Matrix movie as a heuristic device that offers two possibilities for conceptualizing teacher education: as a mirror (looking at ourselves) and as a window (looking at teacher education). We begin by sharing our interests and reason for using self-study while examining the components of The Matrix, noting parallels between key elements in our educational world and Neo’s world. Here we unpack scenes from the movie while making connections between the Matrix world and the world of education in order to problematize many of the longstanding, traditional notions that hinder or prevent all of us from awakening fully. We then discuss how our journeys have been influenced and altered by both self-study and curriculum study, noting the many similarities of our plight of existence with Neo’s false reality by using our experiences as a lens to re-surface the messages in The Matrix for a new generation. These messages can serve as entry points in order to initiate conversations that expand current notions of the role of a teacher and the purpose of school toward more socially-just, democratic ends. We close with personal revelations and implications and consider how our stories can be used as a point-of-entry that can inform teacher preparation. Overall, we hope that our experiences will help others begin to question the seemingly common-sense notions and often unquestioned traditions deeply entrenched in our current world of education that are related to teaching, learning, and learning to teach.

En este artículo utilizamos la película The Matrix como un aparato heurístico que ofrece dos posibilidades en la conceptualización de la formación de profesores: como espejo (para mirarnos a nosotros mismos) y como ventana (para mirar a la formación docente). Partimos por compartir nuestros intereses y la razón para el uso del self-study mientras examinamos los componentes de The Matrix, estableciendo paralelos entre nuestro mundo educacional y el mundo de Neo. En esta sección analizamos escenas de la película haciendo conexiones entre el mundo de la Matrix y el mundo de la educación con el fin de problematizar muchos de los supuestos tradicionales y antiguos que dificultan o no permiten que despertemos completamente. Luego discutimos los modos en que nuestros recorridos han sido influenciados y alterados tanto por el self-study como por el estudio del currículo, destacando las similitudes entre nuestra situación de existencia y la falsa realidad de Neo, utilizando nuestras experiencias como lente para re-significar los mensajes de The Matrix para la nueva generación. Estos mensajes pueden servir como puntos de entrada para iniciar conversaciones que expandan las actuales nociones acerca del rol de los docentes y el propósito de la escuela hacia fines más justos y democráticos. Finalmente concluimos con revelaciones personales y sus implicancias, y consideramos las maneras en que nuestras historias pueden ser utilizadas como puntos de partida para discutir la formación docente. Ante todo, esperamos que nuestras experiencias puedan ayudar a otros a comenzar a cuestionar las nociones aparentemente de sentido común y las tradiciones incuestionadas que están profundamente enraizadas en el actual mundo de la educación y que se relacionan con la enseñanza, el aprendizaje y el aprender a enseñar.
