Those Who Can Do Self-Study, Do Self-Study: But Can They Teach It?

Aquellos que pueden hacer self-study hacen self-study: Pero pueden enseñarlo?

Abstract

This article describes the challenges encountered by a teacher educator and self-study practitioner as he attempted to facilitate a group of colleagues in learning about and engaging in self-study over a two year period. While competent in conducting self-study for himself, the author had never before tried to teach it to others. This led to teaching experiences in which the author grappled with his decision-making across three critical facets of his pedagogy. The findings of this self-study indicate that it is possible to broadly categorize these dilemmas in decision-making as instructional challenges, relational challenges, and methodological challenges. Uncovering and discussing these challenges gives those involved in the self-study of teacher education practices community an opportunity to consider how such dilemmas might be navigated beneficially to advance understanding and use of self-study methodology by others.

Este artículo describe los desafíos encontrados por un formador de formadores y practicante del Self-Study mientras intentaba ser el facilitador de un grupo de colegas que estaban aprendiendo y comenzando a trabajar con Self-Study a lo largo de un periodo de dos años. Aunque era competente en la practica del Self-Study para si mismo, el autor no había intentado enseñarlo a otros. Esta situación lo llevó a experiencias pedagógicas en las que se vio enfrentado con una toma de decisiones relacionada a tres facetas criticas de su pedagogía. Los hallazgos de este Self-Study indican que es posible categorizar estos dilemas en la toma de decisiones, de manera general, en desafíos instruccionales, desafíos relacionales y desafíos metodológicos. Develar y discutir estos desafíos provee a aquellos que participan del self-study de prácticas en la formación docente una oportunidad para considerar de qué modo tales dilemas pueden ser explorados de manera beneficiosa para avanzar en la comprensión y uso de la metodología del self-study.
