Collaboration, Multiple Methods, Trustworthiness: Issues Arising from the 2014 International Conference on Self-study of Teacher Education Practices

Colaboración, métodos múltiples, confiabilidad: Problemáticas surgidas en la Conferencia Internacional de self-study en prácticas de formación docente - 2014

Abstract

This article reviews 65 studies presented at the 10th international self-study of teacher education practices conference in 2014 to determine whether emerging self-study research incorporates the five major characteristics of self-study: self-initiated inquiry that is situated and improvement-aimed; undertaken collaboratively; uses multiple research methods; and demonstrates trustworthiness. We present an analysis of 63 empirical studies with reference to the five major characteristics and several additional criteria. Our analysis indicates that most of the self-studies reported at the conference were conducted within the context of faculty teaching programs with case analysis as the predominant approach; also, most were carried out collaboratively. Multiple research methods were preferred over single methods and the most frequent analysis was presented in the form of themes and topics. This review corroborates that empirical studies generally meet the major characteristics of self-study research, although not every self-study reviewed was conducted with a defined collaborative theoretical framework. Collaboration, use of multiple research methods, and trustworthiness emerged as three characteristics that were not always addressed adequately or carefully.

Este artículo revisa los 65 estudios presentados en la décima conferencia internacional S-STEP en 2014 para determinar si la investigación emergente en self-study incorpora las cinco características principales del self-study: una indagación situada que es auto-iniciada y dirigida al mejoramiento; realizada colaborativamente; que utiliza diversos métodos de investigación; y que demuestra su confiabilidad. Presentamos un análisis de 63 estudios empíricos en referencia a las cinco características principales, mas varios criterios adicionales. Nuestro análisis indica que la mayoría de los self-study reportados en la conferencia fueron realizados al interior de un contexto de programas de formación académica con el estudio de caso como aproximación predominante. En su mayoría fueron realizados de manera colaborativa. La investigación con métodos múltiples aparece como la forma preferida por sobre un método en particular, y los análisis aparecen mas frecuentemente presentados en la forma de temáticas y tópicos. Esta revisión corrobora que los estudios empíricos, en general, cumplen con las características principales de la investigación por self-study, aunque no todos los estudios revisados fueron realizados con un marco teórico definido colaborativamente. La colaboración, el uso de métodos múltiples de investigación y la confiabilidad emergieron como tres características que no siempre fueron atendidas de manera adecuada o cuidadosa.
