Jalane Schmidt
Jalane Schmidt is Associate Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Virginia, where she teaches classes on the anthropology of African diaspora religions and Critical Whiteness Studies. She conducts field research in Cuba on the memorialization of slavery in ritual performances, and is a community activist and public historian who addresses debates over Civil War monuments and the contemporary “alt-right.” Publications: “‘The Antidote to Wall Street’? Cultural and Economic Mobilizations of Afro-Cuban Religions” in Latin American Perspectives (2016); and Cachita’s Streets: The Virgin of Charity, Race, and Revolution in Cuba (2015).
