THE SPIRIT OF EXILE

An epistolary essay

Pages 129-138 | Published online: 24 Nov 2006

Abstract

Is “exile” a relevant descriptor for today’s Indian writer on the world stage? Does the literary and metaphorical use of the term cheapen and dishonor those who suffer literal exile, or does exile describe an alienation and dislocation of spirit for which terms such as diasporic, expatriate, and immigrant are inadequate? Basing their discussion on several poems in Ravi Shankar’s recent book Instrumentality (2004), Shankar, a poet and editor, and Jeffrey F.L. Partridge, a teacher and writer, debate the spirit of exile. The debate, conducted over email, covers a wide range of related topics.
