Overleaf: The European lobster Homarus gammarus (Linnaeus, 1758) from Helgoland, captured in its natural surround at the rocky basement of this small island in the North Sea, stands as an example of a strongly diminished population, but under intensive study including the cooperation of the local fishermen; furthermore, as an example for a wide-ranging research topic reaching from physiological and biochemical studies to population dynamics and fisheries impact feeding into ecological management. The selection of papers in this thematic issue fits into such a wide scope centred at the comparative ecology of clawed and clawless lobster populations worldwide.
