The Art Therapy New Practitioners Essay Prize – Call for Submissions

This prize, previously entitled the Student Essay Prize, is being re-launched by the British Association of Art Therapists and the publishers Taylor & Francis. The aim of the competition is to recognise the valuable and sometimes innovative work and ideas of trainees and newly qualified practitioners, and to encourage future academic authors. The prize will be awarded for the best original essay submitted on any topic relevant to the theory and/or practice of art therapy.

The following criteria apply:

  • The essay must be on a topic relevant to the clinical practice, research or theory of art therapy.

  • The essay must be entirely the entrant's own work.

  • The essay must be written in English.

  • The essay must be between 3000 (minimum) and 5000 (maximum) words in length.

  • The entrant must be a full-time or part-time, pre- or post-registration art therapy student during the current academic year (2013/2014), or have been a full-time or part-time pre- or post-registration art therapy student during the previous academic year (2012/2013).

  • The entrant should not previously have published in International Journal of Art Therapy: Inscape.

  • The manuscript should be prepared in accordance with the ‘instructions for authors’ for International Journal of Art Therapy: Inscape. This is on the IJAT: Inscape page of the Taylor & Francis Journals site, which may be accessed via the members’ section of the BAAT website.

As per the instructions for authors, any client personal data, e.g. images, must have written consent for its inclusion if the essay is to be published.

Entries that do not comply with the above criteria may be not be considered. The closing date for the 2014 Art Therapy New Practitioners Essay Prize will be 31st December 2014. The competition winner will receive a cash prize of £500 awarded by the British Association of Art Therapists and £100 worth of Taylor & Francis publications. The winning essay will also be published in the International Journal of Art Therapy: Inscape subject to approval of the Editorial Board. A panel jointly appointed by the British Association of Art Therapists and Taylor & Francis, and chaired by the Editor of the International Journal of Art Therapy: Inscape will judge the papers. The panel's decision will be final. If, in the view of the judges, none of the submissions are of the required standard, the prize will not be awarded.

Submission details

The essay (including illustrations) should be submitted via the same process as submissions to International Journal of Art Therapy: Inscape. The following information must be included:

  • Name

  • Essay title

  • Word count

  • Course

  • Year/s of study

  • Institution

  • Contact email

  • Contact telephone number

All entries will be acknowledged but there will be no other correspondence with entrants. Submissions received after the published deadline will not be considered.
