The editors are very thankful to the authors for inspiring thought and insights in their research into the topic of online ethnography and communities, bringing new and challenging approaches. Their differing perspectives and contributions enriched this special issue of Ethnography and Education. We are sincerely thankful to Bob Jeffrey who stimulated us, in the first place, to embrace this challenge after a very interesting and successful event in the University of Porto – Rethinking Educational Ethnography: Researching Online Communities and Interactions – in 2011, with the support of Ethnography & Education and Network 19 (of European Conference on Educational Research). This conference gathered participants from diverse disciplines and regions and some of them are now contributors of this special issue. We would furthermore like to acknowledge the support of the publisher and those who provided technical backing.
