We are delighted to present another wide-ranging collection of papers in the first issue of BSHM Bulletin for 2014.
We feel that it is particularly appropriate to present Ivor Grattan-Guinness’s appreciation of Hans Wussing and Christoph Scriba, two pioneers who made significant contributions to the development of the study of the history of mathematics. The article is not only a fitting tribute to two important historians but also illuminates the practice of the subject and the development in the second half of the last century of the networks which have helped it reach its current strong position. That the author himself has played such a leading part in these developments adds to the value of this essay.
Of course, it is not only through academic papers that history can be illuminated, and readers of her paper on John Pell might like to know that Daisy Hildyard’s first novel, Hunters in the Snow, was published in the summer of 2013.
We very much hope that readers will enjoy this issue of the Bulletin.
