The death of Ivor Grattan-Guinness last December has taken away one of the towering figures of the history of mathematics: someone whose influence on the subject, through his own work and through that of his students and others he inspired and supported, has been profound. Like many readers of this Bulletin, I personally owe a great deal to Ivor and will miss him greatly. Adrian Rice's obituary in this issue reminds us just how much Ivor contributed to our subject.

Our obituary for Jackie Stedall will appear in the next issue. The passing of Jackie and Ivor, both of whom did so much to create and direct the BSHM as well as to develop and promote the study of the history of mathematics in general, is an immeasurable loss to our community. I feel very privileged to have known them both.
