Ethical Considerations in Adapted Physical Activity Practices

Abstract

This article focuses on ethical concerns about modifying physical activities within a variety of education, recreation, rehabilitation and competition contexts. An ecological frame of reference common within current educational and rehabilitation theories is utilised for reflecting upon adapted physical activity practices. Ethical principles challenged in the article are (a) the utilitarian consequence to all participants; (b) professional paternalism; and (c) empowerment of individuals with a disability. Concerns arising with respect to these ethical principles in adapted physical activity practices are discussed across modifications in terms of (i) the tasks involved; (ii) the environmental conditions; (iii) the equipment used; (iv) the game rules; and (v) the instruction methods.

Resumen

El artículo enfoca los asuntos éticos a la hora de modificar actividades físicas dentro de una variedad de contextos educativos, recreativos, de rehabilitación y competitivos. Un marco de referencia ecológica común dentro de las teorías actuales educativas y de rehabilitación se utiliza para ponderar sobre prácticas de actividad física adaptada. Principios éticos que se desafían en este artículo son (a) las repercusiones utilitarias para todos lo participantes, (b) el paternalismo professional, y (c) el fortalecimiento de los individuos con una minusvalía. Asuntos que surgen con respecto a estos principios éticos son discutidos por medio de modificaciones de (a) las tareas involucradas, (c) el equipamiento utilizado, (d) las reglas de juego, y (e) los métodos de instrucción.

Dieser Artikel richtet den Blick auf ethische Bedenken in Bezug auf Veränderungen von körperlichen Aktivitäten im Kontext von Erziehung, Freizeit, Rehabilitation und Wettkämpfen. Es wird ein ökologischer Bezugsrahmen gemeinsam mit aktuellen Erziehungs- und Rehabilitationstheorien verwendet, um auf Praktiken in Bewegung, Spiel und Sport in Prävention, Rehabilitation und Behinderung (APA = adapted physical activity) zu reflektieren. Die ethischen Prinzipien, die in diesem Artikel untersucht werden, sind (a) die utilitaristischen Folgen für alle Teilnehmer, (b) professioneller Paternalismus und (c) Stärkung von Menschen mit Behinderung. Bedenken, die in Zusammenhang mit diesen ethischen Prinzipien in Bewegung, Spiel und Sport in Prävention, Rehabilitation und Behinderung (APA) auftauchen, werden im Hinblick auf Modifikationen von (a) Aufgaben, (b) Umweltbedingungen, (c) Material, (d) Regelwerk und (e) Vermittlungsmethode besprochen.
