2. In 2013, the German police trade union helped Claudia Pechstein, a federal police sergeant, file a law suit against the International Skating Union (ISU) on the criminal charge of perjury (Tagesspiegel Citation2013). Also in 2013, the Munich district court supported Pechstein’s plea against a contractual clause requiring her to accept the arbitration of sporting bodies as final and hence renounce her fundamental right to go to court. The news of this judgement prompted Michael Vesper, Director General of the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), to issue a letter inviting national federations to disregard this new case law on the ground that it addressed the contractual clauses of an international federation only (the ISU) but did not annul those of national federations. This initiative prompted 50 top-level German athletes to sign a protest note in support of Pechstein (Hecker and Reinsch Citation2013).
