Dissociation in Classical Texts on Schizophrenia

Pages 342-354 | Received 10 Feb 2013, Accepted 15 May 2013, Published online: 21 Jun 2013

Abstract

The author reviewed a set of classical texts on dementia praecox and schizophrenia looking for dissociative conceptualizations of the disorder, and looking for case descriptions that were dissociative in nature. The review included Bleuler, Kraepelin, Schneider, Meyer, Hoch, Jung, Kahlbaum, and Bateson. Quotations from these texts confirmed the role of dissociation in schizophrenia in the classical literature. In both research and clinical practice, greater attention should be paid to the role of dissociation in schizophrenia.
