Promoting Resilience in Hong Kong School Children: A Critical Reflection

Pages 19-27 | Published online: 22 Dec 2011

Abstract

This paper reviews work on resilience education in Hong Kong schools. The concept of resilience as defined in the Western literature is presented first, followed by a discussion of resilience from the Chinese perspective. The need for promoting resilience in school children and the effectiveness of the two most commonly used resilience-based programmes for current school children, Positive Adolescent Training through Holistic Social Programs and Healthy Promoting Schools, are reviewed. Suggestions for teachers and school counsellors for enhancing resilience further in school children are presented. Directions for educational researchers in refining the current prevention and intervention programmes on mental health are also highlighted.
