ABSTRACT

In response to the limited studies which have comprehensively reviewed the operational knowledge in the field of studying public spaces, this paper attempts to systematically review the different methodological approaches highlighted by previous researchers when studying public spaces. In order to achieve this, 64 research papers which focused on studying, analyzing, measuring, mapping, understanding, using, and evaluating public spaces were selected and critically reviewed to extract meaningful information. The results indicate established study approaches giving multifaceted direction to researchers for further studies and offer insights to urban designers, planners, and policymakers for creating better public spaces.
