The Black Flowers of Robert Mapplethorpe

Published online: 01 Jul 2024

Abstract

An exhibition at the Cómicos Gallery in Lisbon of the “Black Flowers” photographs by Robert Mapplethorpe prompted Alexandre Melo to write an overview of Mapplethorpe’s work. He sees a link between the explicit nudes of the late 1970s and the flower pictures in the way in which the photographer aestheticizes both the human body and the flower as studio objects, stripped of individual or sentimental associations.
