This issue marks two transitions: a change in editor and a change in publisher of the Journal.
The previous issue was the last under the Editorship of Roger Cline. Having taken over the job for five years, it became his role for nearly ten. Roger is now free to spend time on his many other interests spelled out in a valedictory interview with Deborah Jaffé in Newcomen Links (June 2015) Self-effacingly Roger wrote:
“I am very grateful to all the contributors whose writings I have adapted to the Newcomen house style. Recalling my former career drafting patent specifications, I often wonder whether ‘Thank you for your meticulous editing’ is short-hand for ‘What a nit-picker you are’!”
But, as a contributor I can attest to his warmth and enthusiasm towards submissions, his careful and patient help in polishing and improving imperfect material, and meticulous care over proofs and illustrations. The Newcomen Society is indebted to Roger for his outstanding service.
During Roger’s tenure as Editor, Maney Publishing took over as publisher of the Journal. This had good results, including an enhanced appearance of the Journal and more colour pages. Now Taylor & Francis have taken over Maney and will be the new publisher. Special thanks are due to Nick Hunt who was production editor for Maney’s and ensured a strong professional publication.
