Ancient Near Eastern Studies on Children

ABSTRACT

This article first presents an analysis of the origin and development of modern studies on childhood in antiquity. After this historiographical context and as a prelude to the following articles, attention is focused on the treatment and potential that the children of the Ancient Near East have had for the scientific community in the last half century.

Daniel Justel

Daniel Justel is Assistant Professor of Ancient History at the University of Alcalá (Alcalá de Henares, Madrid). His PhD Thesis (CSIC-University of Zaragoza, 2012) dealt with the legal status of childhood in Mesopotamia during the Late Bronze Age (1500-1100 BC). From the disciplines of Assyriology and Biblical Studies, his main lines of research are family law from cuneiform sources and the deported communities in the ancient Near East during the First Millennium BC, especially in the Neo-Babylonian and Achaemenid periods.
