Foreword

Foreword to QIRT Journal Issue 14(2)

During my first year of handling the QIRT Journal as Editor-in-Chief, I gained experience and new knowledge from innovative and interesting results presented in the submitted articles. These were mostly research articles originating from papers to the recent QIRT and QIRT ASIA conferences.Footnote1

During this last year, the editors and reviewers have supported the QIRT Journal and myself constructively by improving the scientific and technical quality of the contributions. They have adapted well to the new structure of the Editorial Manager, which enables the electronic submission and review process of the papers.

Short obituary of Prof. Darryl Almond

With great regret, we have to announce that our colleague and one of our most active and constructive reviewers, Professor Darryl P. Almond, died on the 20th of July 2017. He was Emeritus Professor at the University of Bath, UK, which he joined in 1976. As a physicist, one of his main focuses was non-destructive testing (NDT) with specialisation in thermographic techniques. He contributed to the development of the basic theories of the thermodynamic heat transfer processes and adapted the thermographic methods and techniques to a broad area of applications. With more than 300 articles and numerous reviews on these topics, he was one of the main drivers for the development of active thermography techniques. His book written with P.M. Patel on Photothermal Science and Techniques (Chapman & Hall, 1996) still remains a key reference for scientists and technicians starting to work in this field. From 1992 to 2006, he was an active member of the QIRT Steering Committee. As a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of QIRT Journal, up to recently (his last review was received in April), he contributed to make our Journal a reference in the domain of thermography. Posthumously, we would like to thank him for his engagement, fruitful contributions and always friendly discussions.
