Editorial: the future of mental health promotion is on the Internet

Though the Internet has changed our lives irrevocably, its potential for enhancing mental health services is yet to be realised. Though not solely focused on online innovations, this issue provides a small glimpse of what this future might look like. In face-to-face services, Logan and Wheeler (Citation2019) found that it was the processes in which outcome measures were delivered that could be conducive to recovery; likewise, how participants are engaged in online services will be important to consider. Moreover, other papers in this issue demonstrate that mental health can be supported in creative ways (Kalanj-Mizzi, Snell, & Simmonds, Citation2019; Pirkis et al., Citation2019; Wu, Wong, Mak, Yip, & Mak, Citation2019), outside of traditional settings (Morris & Scott, Citation2019).

O’Dea et al. (Citation2019) evaluated an online, school-based mental health approach, from parents’ perceptions. Gindidis, Stewart, and Roodenburg (Citation2019) found that mobile apps were used independently of ongoing practitioner support. In Queensland, Krysinska et al. (Citation2019) reported that most resources for people affected by suicide were available online. Given public demand for online approaches (Reupert et al., Citation2019), the future of mental health promotion is likely to be online.
