The Role of Anxiety and Childhood Trauma on Vaginismus and Its Comorbidity with Other Female Sexual Dysfunctions

Abstract

Objectives

Comparing patients with vaginismus with women without vaginismus in terms of anxiety, childhood trauma, and other sexual dysfunctions. Methods: Outpatients with vaginismus (n = 50) and subjects for comparison (n = 50) were recruited from a hospital in a large Turkish city. The Beck Anxiety Inventory, Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, and Golombok–Rust Inventory of Sexual Satisfaction were used. Results: While anxiety and sexual dysfunction scores were found to be high in vaginismus group, there was no difference between the two groups in the trauma. Conclusions: Vaginismus is associated with anxiety and other sexual dysfunctions but not with childhood trauma.
