How Research Influences Policy: The Evidence we Need to “speak truth to power”—A Reflection on an AAHE Scholar Address Three Decades on

For over 30 years, the American Association for Health Education (AAHE), a former association as part of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (now SHAPE America), named an AAHE Scholar each year. This juried award was given to an AAHE member with an exemplary record of academic scholarship throughout his/her career. AAHE scholars were invited to make a major presentation at the annual convention and invited to submit a paper on their presentations publication in the American Journal of Health Education. A list of AAHE Scholars is provided below.

With the blessings of the AJHE Editorial Board, I have invited the living AAHE Scholars to submit a papers for publication that updates and enhances their scholar addresses. We firmly believe that the thoughts of this constellation of scholars will provide a needed and unique historical perspective and would be of interest to Health Educators in multiple settings.

The second AAHE Scholar Paper entitled “How Research Influences Policy: The Evidence we Need to ‘speak truth to power’—A Reflection on an AAHE Scholar Address Three Decades on” by Larry W. Green provides his reflection of how society and health research has changed since he gave his scholar address thirty years ago. As a recognized leader in the field, Dr. Green’s thoughts will resonant with health educators.

Other AAHE Scholar Papers will appear in subsequent issues.
