The rationale in this statement also fails to acknowledge that the geography taught within courses for majors is also the critical geography we want teachers to understand for their own conceptual framework of the discipline they teach. How is geographic knowledge for majors, minors, and general education students not critical and useful for geography teachers, too?

Jerry T. Mitchell
Jerry T. Mitchell is a Research Professor of Geography and Director of the Center of Excellence for Geographic Education at the University of South Carolina. He is the current NCGE president (2020) and former Editor of the Journal of Geography (2010–2019). In addition to interests in geography education, he specializes in environmental hazards research. A strong believer in the importance of undergraduate study abroad experiences, he has taught in Aruba, Chile, and Costa Rica.
