Pages 253-264 | Published online: 06 Oct 2009

Abstract

The author, a psychiatrist, writes of her own experiences becoming a lesbian mother. The narrative illustrates of some developmental tasks facing lesbians as they grow from adolescence to adulthood. Issues explored include coming out, recognizing and shedding internalized homophobia, and dealing with conflict arising from internalized homophobia within a couple and with societal discrimination. The author's experiences involved choices, reflections, and decisions that many lesbians may face on their way to motherhood.

McGill University Sexual Identity Centre (MUSIC) is Canada's first mental health clinic dedicated to providing quality services to the LGB population as well as those questioning their sexuality.

The author would like to express her gratitude to her life partner, Donna, for taking this journey to parenthood with her. She also thanks her for her willingness to share our story.
