Abstract

In this essay, the author explores themes of self-disclosure, transparency, and the clinical use of self. Through the lens of the author's experiences as a transgender male therapist who transitioned while in clinical practice, the essay examines how clients responded to this disclosure and how it affected the clinical relationship and work. This essay was originally delivered as the keynote address for the Transgender Clinical Symposium, New York, on February 20, 2010.
