Looking back, looking ahead

As we begin our twenty-sixth volume of JGLMH with this issue, I’m reflecting on how far the Journal has come in the last several years. As the journal has become more widely known as a premier avenue of research publication in the field of LGBTQ+ mental health, we have seen our rate of submissions grow substantially. This has enabled us to be more selective in what we publish, leading to a higher quality of study generally, but also an increase in the variety of studies. As a clinically oriented journal, edited by psychiatrists, we are more and more looking to publish reports that describe and/or evaluate clinical programs for the LGBTQ+ community. You will also see that we have been publishing reviews, letters to the editor and commentaries that lead to JGLMH being a space where ideas about the state of the current research and where we are headed can be aired, examined and debated.

In this first issue of 2022 we present four original research studies on a diverse range of topics including emotion-focused writing, “flourishing” as a concept that applies to LGBTQ+ people, a qualitative study that expands our longstanding interest in rural living by looking at LGBTQ+ community connection in those that live in semi-rural U.S. counties, and a study that examines both identity- and relationship-based discrimination and its relation to mental health. We also present another in our ongoing Oral History series of interviews of prominent LGBTQ+ mental health leaders by Emeritus Editor Dr. Jack Drescher. We have a number of such interviews remaining to be published, but Dr. Drescher is looking to engage others in continuing to document our community’s oral history, so please contact us to express your interest in participating in this series going forward.
