Borderland Security and Migration: Balancing Humanitarian Response with Crisis Preparedness & Emergency Management—The Social and Cultural Challenges to Homeland Security

&
Pages 1-6 | Published online: 12 Jan 2017

ABSTRACT

Irregular mass migration flows and border crossings in an age of terror present challenges when unregulated mass migration is viewed through the lens of homeland security. The inability to address these challenges pose national and regional security concerns that compromise the health, safety and security of the residents of the destination countries and the migrants on the journey. This collection of papers seeks to help practitioners, policy makers and civil leaders understand and address the social, cultural and homeland security needs associated with irregular mass migration flows.

Notes

1. In particular, […] unauthorized migration, clandestine migration, illegal migration, and irregular migration. In particular such migration is increasingly perceived by the governments and citizens of wealthier countries as a security threat (Wohlfeld, Citation2014, p. 65; see also, Collier, Citation2014; Lutterbeck, Citation2006)
