The impact of capacity building on community leadership for bui communities impacted by dam construction

ABSTRACT

The paper assessed the impacts of capacity building on community leadership for managing Bui National Park; and whether dam construction, resettlement, ethnicity, age, livelihood, and gender could mediate the impacts of capacity building on community leadership for managing Bui National Park. Data were gathered through multiple methods through an administration of questionnaires and interviews. The paper resolved the few capacity building opportunities on community leadership failed to meet the core needs of the dam impacted communities, including the management of the Bui National Park. Ethnicity (Nafana, Ewe, and Mo) and relocate were the only preditors of community leadership.

Dr Jones Lewis Arthur

Dr Jones Lewis Arthur had his Bachelor of Education (Social Studies), Master of Arts (Environmental Management and Policy) at the University of Cape Coast-Ghana, Post Graduate Diploma (innovation in Finance) in Erasmus University Rotterdam, and PhD in Geography in University of Victoria, Canada. His work experience includes teaching and conducting academic research at both undergraduate and graduate levels of education. His research focuses on livelihoods and dam impacts as well as energy and sustainable management.

Dr Arthur currently teaches research and energy and sustainable development in Sunyani Technical University, Valley View University (Techiman Campus) and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (Institute of Distance Learning). He has over the years taught (Energy and Sustainable Management, research methods, ICT) and supervised student theses at both the undergraduate and graduate schools.

Dr Arthur has acquired a stream of experience in both academic and administrative positions. Currently, he is the Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science and Technology and a member of several university committees including the Executive Committee and Academic Board. He has Chaired and also served as a member of many committees such as committee to develop intellectual property, guidelines for peer review, as well as committees that developed several curricula for the Department of Secretaryship and management studies (SMS).

Dr Arthur continues to serve and offer his services in various capacities to support the growth and development of the Sunyani Technical University. He continues to be an invaluable asset to the University community.
