ABSTRACT
There is limited knowledge on the determinants of China’s domestic tourism. Using a gravity model approach, this study examined the determinants of domestic tourism demand for Guilin, China, in 1999 and 2007. Results show that in both 1999 and 2007 the domestic tourism demand for Guilin in a provincial administrative region (PAR) was determined by (1) total city and town population of the PAR; (2) average annual employee wage of the PAR; and (3) train travel time from the PAR to Guilin. However, the impact of the three determinants declined from 1999 to 2007. The implications of the study finding are discussed.

Notes
1. There are 32 provincial administrative regions (PARs) in the mainland of China: 23 provinces, four centrally administered municipalities and five autonomous regions.
2. It is noted that the data for 1999 were not a perfect match with the calendar year due to unavailability of November and December data during data collection.
