Abstract

Heritage tourism has been a substantial subject in tourism studies in the past decades. New types of heritage are exploited and marketed in the tourism industry along with its rapid development. Within this trend, so‐called ”red tourism„ has recently witnessed a noteworthy growth in China. This article attempts to review this line of research by, first, conceptualizing red tourism in general, and second, by differentiating it from the current communist heritage tourism practice in Europe. Sources for review include available government documents, newspapers, and academic research papers, which enables the depiction of a brief picture of red tourism with special highlights of the political nature of government involvement in both the supply‐and‐demand sites of heritage tourism. On the basis of those, recommendations are proposed for future studies regarding heritage tourism in general and red tourism in particular.
