As we prepare this Editorial, we do so having just received our hard copies of the first issue of the Journal to complement the on‐line version. This second issue of the Journal includes papers on a diverse range of topics that reflect the breadth of sustainability practice, not just in terms of the subject matter, but also in respect of the countries in which the reported research was undertaken. We hope to maintain and strengthen such diversity and are actively seeking and encouraging papers that will support our objective. In this respect, we are especially keen to elicit contributions from the ‘materials’, ‘energy’, ‘transportation’, and ‘built environment’ communities. Such contributions should emphasise both the engineering and sustainability contexts of the work reported.

Publication of this second issue of IJSE will coincide with the launch of our on‐line submission and review system which can be accessed at the following URL (http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/tsue). This feature will improve the process of manuscript submission by authors as well as the management of reviews and communication between the various parties.

We are actively collaborating with the organisers of several international conferences with a view to publishing a selection of high quality papers that represent advances in such areas as life cycle engineering, low carbon technologies, behavioural changes in support of sustainable consumption, and business models for sustainable value chains. We are also progressing our plans for ‘Special Issues’ and intend to carry a ‘call for papers’ for the first of these in the third issue of the Journal.
