Welcome to the third issue of IJSE in 2016. This issue consists of seven papers, covering a range of topics from specially designed engines for photovoltaics and non-edible oils to various emissions from industrial activities and vehicle types.

The first paper by Colombo et al. uses a case study in Russia to examine alternatives to gas flaring. The second paper by Singh et al. presents a modified brushed permanent magnet DC motor for photovoltaic operated solar systems which overcomes the most critical constraint of ingestion of vapours of working fluid inside the rotor and stator.

The third paper in this issue by Saravanan et al. examines the factors influencing NOX emissions of a stationary diesel engine fuelled with crude rice bran oil methyl ester blend. The next paper by Shinde and Sagade explores the experimental results of their Compound Parabolic Trough system and shows that the best efficiency is achieved with the copper receiver coated with black copper.

The fifth paper by Rocco and Gentile evaluates the novel ‘Palette Modular Device’ (PMD) technology that addresses the recovery of wastes from ‘Physical Vapour Deposition’ (PVD) maintenance with an LCA approach. The next work by Suresh et al. investigates the suitability of different non-edible derived biodiesels such as cotton seed oil methyl ester, Honne oil methyl ester and Rubber seed oil methyl ester in a four stroke, single cylinder compression ignition engine.

This issue concludes with a paper by Bhatia and Riddell that examines the trade-offs between vehicle range and CO2 emissions as a function of electric emissions coefficient. The hydrogen fuel cell vehicle is found to be preferable to battery electric vehicles under conditions in which a high level of CO2 emissions is associated with power generation (CO2 per kWh) and a high vehicle range requirement. The battery electric vehicle is preferable for all other conditions.
