Welcome to the sixth and final issue of 2016. With this issue, we have successfully completed our ninth year of publication and wish to thank all of our authors, reviewers, board members and administrators. Please note that the acknowledgement list of those who have been supporting us through their comments, recommendations and reviews will appear in the first IJSE issue of 2017.

This has been our second year of publication with six issues, and we have continued our efforts to focus the scope of our publications by redirecting a number of submissions to other more relevant journals published by Taylor and Francis such as International Journal of Agricultural Sustainability, International Journal of Sustainable Building Technology and Urban Development, and Journal of Sustainable Tourism.

In this final issue of the year, we offer six papers.

The first paper by Li et al. presents a methodology for modelling multi-product manufacturing systems with dynamic material, energy and information flows to generate economic and environmental value stream maps. The next paper by Gosh et al. considers three carbon policies to determine the optimal order quantity and number of shipments based on a two-echelon supply chain model.

The third paper by Kim et al. looks at Kansei (affective) Engineering to show how preference mechanism works on the user’s intuitive and subjective evaluation in order to support sustainable behaviour through design.

In the fourth paper, Kumar and Yadav perform experiments to determine the quantity of water produced from atmospheric air using different desiccant materials. The next paper by Alemam and Li proposes a method of improvement to an existing diaphragm forming process. They show that the integration of quality functional deployment and functional analysis can systematically guide the generation of new eco-design concepts with less dependence on design intuition.

Finally, Francis and Abdel Rahman show a promising way to treat submerged-arc welding slags using rice husk wastes to transform them into useful porous and functional glass ceramic products via a simple powder technology and sintering approach.

On an administrative note, we are aware that with increasing pressure from governments and funding bodies, many authors seek open access (OA) for their publications. IJSE operates a ‘hybrid’ publishing model which allows all authors to publish their work either under the traditional subscription method or using a Gold OA model.

Publishing using the Gold OA model requires the author to pay an article publishing charge upon acceptance to the journal. When an author publishes Gold OA, the final, typeset and copyedited version of a journal article (known as the ‘Version of Record’) is published free-to-access online. The author can share their final published article any way they want – social media, academic networking sites or posting it on their departmental or personal website or in a repository immediately after publication. Publishing Gold OA also means the author or co-author retains copyright to their work. In addition, Taylor & Francis would publish under the terms of a ‘License to Publish’ which links to the ‘Creative Commons’ licence of your choice.

Other papers published under the traditional method allow authors to publish using the Green OA model. Publishing Green OA allows authors to self-archive their article, and often applies to earlier versions of your paper, such as the ‘Accepted Manuscript’ (the version that has been through peer review but has not yet been copyedited, typeset or had metadata applied to it – this is distinguishable from the ‘Version of Record’ primarily by its lack of journal and publisher branding). This version of the paper can be archived and accessed in repositories or databases, usually following an embargo period. It can be shared on personal sites as soon as it has been published, and on an institutional or subject repository (such as ResearchGate or Academia.edu) after 12 months. Under Green OA, copyright is assigned to Taylor & Francis in the traditional manner.

Any article published in IJSE is fully compliant with most funder mandates as a result of the Journal’s Gold and Green OA policy. Further information on publisher OA policy could be found at http://authorservices.taylorandfrancis.com/publishing-open-access-with-taylor-francis/.

Our plans for the 10th anniversary of the IJSE next year include a Special Issue based on a selected number of the best papers from the ‘International Conference on Sustainable Design and Manufacturing’ which took place earlier this year in Crete, Greece, and renewing and extending our Editorial Board Membership based on the revised IJSE scope (http://www.tandfonline.com/action/journalInformation?show=aimsScope&journalCode=tsue20).
