The Way of Saint James as an event: politics and nation

Pages 233-248 | Received 08 Mar 2016, Accepted 03 Jul 2016, Published online: 03 Aug 2016

ABSTRACT

In recent years, the Way of Saint James has been the focus of a great deal of research and many publications. Its post-secular nature, in which concepts such as spirituality and nature play key roles, has been the focus of the discussion. Nevertheless, there has only been a marginal approach from the standpoint of events. The purpose of the present paper is to explore in depth the relationship between the Way of St. James and events. Two historical periods will be considered. The first begins in the late nineteenth century and lasts until 1975. During this period, Compostellan Holy Years acquired considerable ideological meaning, being clearly linked to the concept of nation. The second period coincides with widespread pilgrimages, and leaves the political significance of St. James in the shadow of tourism. Nevertheless, our aim is to prove that the current success of the Way remains closely related to Holy Years and, therefore, to the concept and meaning of events.
