SLIVER STRENGTH AS A MEASURE OF FIBRE-ALIGNMENT IN TOPMAKING

Abstract

Strength tests made on slivers at various stages of topmaking give a measure of the fibre alignment in the slivers during processing and, consequently, of the efficiency of the gilling process. Fibre alignment in the comb sliver was found to be lower than in the sliver as presented to the comb. There was a linear relationship between log (sliver strength per unit mass between the jaws) and the test length, at test lengths of from 3 to 6 cm for card, gill, comb, and top slivers of five lots of 58s quality wool.
