Readiness to Visit University Counseling Centers: Social Support, Stigma, and Communication Efficacy

Pages 282-295 | Published online: 04 Oct 2019

Abstract

Using the transtheoretical model (TTM), this study examined relationships between three potential barriers (social support, mental health-related stigma, and mental health-related communication efficacy) to college students (n = 302) visiting university counseling centers and how each barrier differed by TTM stage. Social support was positively related to communication efficacy and partially inversely related to stigma. Communication efficacy and stigma were unrelated. Significant TTM stage differences were observed for each barrier to visiting university counseling centers.
