Interview with Rosie Kay

Abstract

Since the founding of her dance company in 2004, Rosie Kay has been involved in creating award-winning performances that range across various themes in unique settings. She is also a research associate and was one of the first Leverhulme artists in residence at the School of Anthropology and Museum Ethnography at the University of Oxford. Kay was a keynote speaker at the “Architecture, Festival and the City” conference held at Birmingham City University (BCU) in November 2017. The following short interview with María José Martínez Sánchez, an organizer of the conference, is from March 5, 2018; it develops some of the topics addressed in Kay’s conference talk.

María José Martínez Sánchez

María José Martínez Sánchez is a lecturer at the Birmingham School of Architecture and Design. Her work explores through interdisciplinary methodologies performativity in architectural and urban spaces. In 2012, she was awarded the INJUVE prize for young creators in performance for the piece entitled VACIO, which was presented at the Museum of Contemporary Art Reina Sofia, Madrid. She has presented her work at the Quadrennial of Scenography in Prague (2015), the Biennale of Dance in Venice (2016), the Biennale of Architecture in Venice (2018) and the Spanish National Theatre (CDN) (2018).
