Looking Back to Look Forward: Reanimating Textiles for Novel Design and Manufacturing

Pages 126-142 | Published online: 12 Mar 2020

Abstract

In 1949, the RISD Museum Costume & Textile Collection was gifted a large collection of industrial textile samples manufactured by some of the finest export weaving facilities in 19th century France. These documents— still largely uncatalogued— are a remarkable expression of a manufacturing process operating at the highest level. Many of the samples contain industrial techniques that have all but vanished from contemporary textile design and manufacturing.
