It is probably an understatement that sound studies is here to stay. Over the years, the field has grown exponentially and this issue is a reflection of the breadth of topics, contexts, discourses and technologies of sound that scholars in a wide variety of disciplines now routinely engage. But it also shows that much remains to be done to recognise the full, sensory potential of sound as a vital component of academic publishing, not least of this journal. An excellent example of how sound can be embedded in a text about sound is David Copenhafer’s essay on acoustic surveillance in Touch of Evil and The Conversation, which is enhanced by video and audio clips from these seminal films. Authors who are interested in linking audio-visual material – their own or already published – to their articles are encouraged to discuss the available options and applicable copyright conditions with the editor.
