Juan Fernando Velasquez
Juan Fernando Velasquez is a postdoctoral scholar in the Michigan Society of Fellows and assistant professor at the Musicology Department in the School of Music, Theater and Dance at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He holds a Ph.D. in Musicology from the University of Pittsburgh and a M.A. in music with emphasis on Musicology from Eafit University (Colombia). His research focusses on sound’s relationship to urban modernisation in postcolonial Colombia, bringing together musicological and ethnomusicological approaches to study questions about privilege, modernity, and ecologies of sound. He is author of the book Los ecos de la villa: la música en los periódicos y revistas de Medellín (1886–1903) and his articles have been published in Latin American Music Review and the Boletín de Musica de Casa de las Américas.
