Sustainable reuse of derelict industrial area buildings – case studies in Taiwan, Japan, and Germany

Abstract

The transformation of derelict industrial sites into public spaces represents a significant enhancement to the quality of life and land use, and at the same time marks a new commitment to the transformation of once-industrial sites to new cultural and environmental uses. Redevelopment of the industrial heritage has emerged in Taiwan due to the transformation of the economic system and the longing for traditional culture and local identity. Many unused industrial buildings, such as mining sites, sugar factories, wine factories and electronics factories have been involved in different types of redevelopment plans all over Taiwan. The present study evaluates three design strategies that might be used to reclaim derelict sites in urban areas transforming them for the society and the environment. Each strategy is related to different landscape characters: the heritage, the environmental and the socio-cultural characters. The objective of the present work was to analyse those design strategies used in the reclamation of derelict industrial areas using three representative different case studies: Ciaotou Creative Park, Noritake Garden (ノリタケの森) and Duisburg Nord Park, from local to national, respectively.
