A two-steps close-form positioning estimator based on AOA/TOA measurements

ABSTRACT

Positioning is an increasingly important area in wireless networks. Time of arrival (TOA) and angle of arrival (AOA) are two of the most widely used physical parameters in positioning. In this letter, a two-step closed-form positioning method based on TOA and AOA measurements is proposed. Through the application of the least squares estimate to the original maximum likelihood optimization problem, a coarse estimate of the source node is obtained. We next compute a highly helpful weight, which is the inverse of the covariance matrix obtained by applying the predicted source node position. Finally, the weighted least squares method is used to estimate the final position of the source node. The proposed estimator has good estimation accuracy and low complexity and is very close to Cramer-Rao Lower Bounds, according to simulations.
