Abstract
Coaches report using goals, but often employ only broad (i.e., win) or long-range (i.e., national championship) goals without lower-level goals. To provide smaller steps along the way to long-term goals, a goal setting program was instituted with a women's college soccer team. Three levels of goals (i.e., individual, position group, and team) were utilized for one competitive season. The framework and impacts of the goal setting program are explained and discussed across all three levels from the perspective of the athletes, the coaching staff, and the sport psychology consultant. All three levels of goals produced both positive and negative outcomes.
