Abstract
The psychological demands of elite soccer referees have increased substantially in recent years. This article presents a psychological preparation framework for elite soccer referees, tailored to the unique demands of their task. First, psychological factors pertaining to elite soccer refereeing are reviewed in the areas of (a) decision-making, (b) game management, (c) the referee crew, and (d) referee evaluation. Second, a psychological preparation framework for elite soccer referees is presented, including components of match demands evaluation, motivational decisions, planning, mental simulation, and post-match analysis. Finally, the conclusions emphasize the role of the practitioner in each stage, providing recommendations for future research.
