Esophageal Reflux: New Concepts in Medical Management

Pages 131-137 | Published online: 06 Jul 2016

Abstract

Diminished muscle tone in the lower part of the gullet, not a hiatus hernia, has been found to cause most reflux. Although the pathophysiology of this dysfunction remains largely unexplained, simple regimens based primarily on administration of antacid and changes in diet (often to incorporate more protein and less fat and glucose) can take care of most patients. Only about 5% may eventually require surgery.
