Abstract
Accelerated bone loss and diminished new bone formation in primary involutional osteoporosis far outstrip the rates seen in “normal aging.” Their serious consequences can be mitigated with pharmacologic agents and adjunctive regimens.
This is the second of three articles on the osteopenias. The first, “Differential Diagnosis of Osteopenia,” by Gregory R. Mundy, appeared in the November issue. The third, “Mechanisms and Management of Osteomalacia,” by Louis V. Avioli, will be published in January.
